The Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev Talks About Highschool, The Media and Dating Ian Somerhalder

I must say that I am a bit biased because Vampire Diaries is one of my favorite shows on TV right now and as opposed to the Twilight kids, the TVD stars can actually act. Nina Dobrev set down with Teen Vogue and spilled the beans on everything we’ve always wanted to know but were afraid to ask. Like is she really dating her gorgeous co-star Ian Somerhalder? Well… as E! likes to say, So true? So False? We’re so not sure. Dobrev gave the perfect confusing interview answer: “We expected the rumors. Like, if I wasn’t dating Ian, I’d be dating Paul. A lot of people who work together end up dating, so it wouldn’t be unusual, but I’ve never dated anyone I’ve worked with”.

I truly think that Dobrev just has the best job in the world. Being pursued by two drop dead beautiful guys like Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder and on top of that playing the good girl everyone loves and a bad girl who has tighter clothes bigger hair and a filthier mouth. Jackpot!

But what does Dobrev think about playing this role of a lifetime as two different people? “When I signed on to the show, I didn’t know whether I’d be playing both girls, and while it’s been cool, it’s also exhausting because it’s double the work. You invest so much of your heart and soul and energy into making even one character. It’s like doing two movies at once.” Even though Nina identifies more with Elena, she definitely has more fun with Katherine.

So how does Nina Dobrev stay so beautiful in between never-ending shoots? She tries to eat healthy and do a lot of yoga whenever she can. “I like to drink my kombucha, I like smoothies and I genuinely love oatmeal because it reminds me of childhood. But having chocolate or cake makes me happy too”. Hold up… Kombucha??? I was as confused as you are, so I looked it up and it’s some sort of fermented tea.

Now that Dobrev is a big star and the object of desire for all hot vampires, she is also a paparazzi target, and that takes some getting used to. “Going to the gym, to the airport, to meetings and auditions, getting lunch—they somehow find you. I just feel like a normal girl, and the whole concept is very odd to me. But other people, like Ian, have had that experience before, so they’re like, ‘Yeah, this is what happens; there’s nothing you can do about it’”.

Last but not least, what was Nina like in High-school, a competitive performing-arts high school in Toronto that is? “I wanted to be the jock, and I wanted to be a dancer and actress. I was also a gymnast and very academically driven. I always had a lot on my plate and was really overwhelmed. Not much has changed—I’m constantly trying to one-up myself and raising the stakes. Ha! No pun intended”.
