Watching one of my recent favorite show – Dogs 101 – on Animal Planet, I finally saw the Husky story. I personally have never had a dog but have dreamed of one all my life. I love big dogs, and living in a tiny apartment in downtown Miami, would not be fair to my future best friend. I never knew exactly what kind of dog I wanted because I really do love them all but Mr. Smith had mentioned that the only dog he will be willing to have is a husky (He loves snow). After giving it some thought, I immediately fell in love with the idea and as soon as we move up north and have a good size house and yard – I WILL have that dog.
After watching the Husky special I realized that it really is the perfect dog for me. The husky is a strong silent type but when it comes to making it’s point across it can howl so loud, he can be heard up to 10 miles away. The breed is originally from North East Siberia but was brought to America by way of Alaska in 1909. The Huskies love pulling sleds in cold weather which may become easy since they have well furred toes that insulate sub zero temperatures, can change it’s metabolism which allows them to run for long periods of time and not get tired and of course their double layer coat that can withstand temps of up to -160. They have a great adventures spirit, sometimes against their own good so you might want to make sure the leash is well secure when you take them on a trip or your Husky might go on their own little adventure.
When it comes to training, they are a very smart breed so make sure you don’t try to outsmart them – They’ll know. They do have a lot of energy so make sure they have a large space to run around in. Their thick coat does need attention so weekly grooming is necessary. They are prone to some health issues such as hip displacement and eye issues but they are great with kids and can make a great family pet. One day…
