Top Video Monday - Eminem & Rihanna / I Love The Way You Lie

O-M-G I love this song so much i want to scream it from the roof tops. I am so happy that Eminem is back from hibernation and is delivering these amazing songs once again. I always thought he was a genius, an artist like him comes around very rarely. I have been addicted to I love The Way You Lie since it came out on the radio and now I’m completely stocked for the video. It’s fantastic!

Dominic Monaghan (Lost and Flash Forward) and Megan Fox (Transformers) actually make a pretty hot couple. Between Eminem, Rihanna, Dominic, Megan and a burning house, This video can’t get any hotter.

Top Video Monday - Nena / 99 Luftballoons (Red Balloons)

The song you know as “99 Red Balloons” from the epic comedy Wedding Crashers, is actually a german protest song called “99 Luftballoons”. After Being released in West Germany is 1983, Luftballoons immediately reached the #1 spot that year. Later released in the UK in 1984, the English version topped the UK Singles Chart and the German version made it to #2 on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Contrary to popular belief Luftballoons does not translate into red balloons, this mistake was made by Amrican DJ’s when the song first came out.  A Luftballoon is a colorful toy balloon however the song tells the story of of 99 balloons floating into the air, triggering a nuclear reaction by military forces. Nena never had another hit single after Luftballoons and is considered to be a very successful one hit wonder artist.

Top Video Monday - Lauren Hill / Doo Wop

From the album “The Miseducation of Lauren Hill” by of course Lauren Hill, Doo Wop (That Thing) was released on October 27, 1998. Doo Wop the 10th single to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and it stayed there for two weeks in the fall of 1998. The hit song also won two Grammy Awards the following February.

The reason I really love this video is because of the unique display of differences and similarities it shows between the 90′s and the 60′s, from dance moves to clothes. The video is  a split screen of a block party going on in these two interesting eras and is all about Lauren Hill warning the men and women, about the struggles of being men and women in both generations. Doo Wop (That Thing was filmed  in Washington Heights, Manhattan in the mid 90′s and shows Lauren Hill six months pregnant.

Ann and Nancy Wilson Are the Best We'll Ever See

You might not know it because of all the sports and movie pieces I write here but I’m a very avid music aficionado.  Not having a voice of my own has not stopped me from screaming out my favorite songs when I hear them and truth be told, it takes one hell of a song these days to blow my skirt up.

Something about music today just isn’t the same as the songs I’ve come to know and love from the 60′s 70′s and 80′s.  Sure most of the R&B and Rap songs that come out today make for great club and dance music but I value a good set of lyrics and a solid vocal performance more than a couple of rhymes and a good beat.  It’s for this reason that I felt compelled to remind or introduce you to the greatest songwriter and singer I have ever and will ever have the pleasure of listening to: Ann and Nancy Wilson.

Heart was a rock band formed back in the 60′s and was eventually headed by two young and upcoming sisters in the 70′s  named Ann and Nancy Wilson.  Ann Wilson was lead vocalist and Nancy Wilson was secondary vocalist and they each shared a variety of instruments, most notably the guitar work of Nancy.  Throughout the 70′s and 80′s, Heart was pegged as one of the best rock groups around and even today, they’re releasing a new album entitled Red Velvet Car, with 14 new songs.  It’s rare to see a band stick together as much as Heart has over the last 30 years but boy am I glad they did.

When I hear good music for the first time, I immediately ask Mrs. Smith who has sung this song (She’s more up-to-date on these sort of things) and then I go straight for the computer to research the song.  I’ll play it over and over and over again, picking apart every word to see if it’s truly a great piece of work or just something that sounds pretty cool because of a nifty DJ.  After listening to a lot of the songs Heart has put out over the last 30 years, I’m confident in saying that there is no greater set of pipes than the ones Ann Wilson has been using.

That woman … wow can she belt out a note.  I work from home every-day and find myself listening to at least a few Heart songs over and over again simply because of the marvel known as Ann Wilson.  You can take all of the Beyonce’s, Katy Perry’s, Pinks, Fergie’s, Carrie Underwood’s you want and absolutely none of them will compare with what Ann Wilson can do.  To be fair all of the aforementioned are excellent performers and have great great talent but it’s just not the same.  Many would dare to compare Ann Wilson to Madonna and Lady Gaga but that’s not appropriate.  Madonna and Lady Gaga have great voices and their performances are like nothing we’ve ever seen before but if you take away their acts, they don’t hold a candle to Ann’s voice.

Watching old Heart videos, you’re usually use to seeing Nancy Wilson with the striking blond hair, jamming out on a guitar while Ann Wilson has the microphone a full foot away from her mouth for fear of blowing it up with her powerful voice.  Music videos like Magic Man, Barracuda and my absolute favorite, Alone, have reminded me about a generation that brought the absolute best out of the music industry.  I fear that a talent like these two will never surface again because of what the music industry has become.  More about the looks and the act, rather than the voice in my opinion.  I mean … have you actually heard Ke$ha sing?  It’s like watching Alicia Sylverstone’s role in “Clueless” put to music.  No thank-you.

So to anyone out there that thinks the music of today is where it’s at, I challenge you to pick up a Heart CD or simply visit You Tube and check out Ann and Nancy Wilson.  Make sure you filter through to the “Alone” music video, past or present and then come back here and thank me for introducing you to real rock music.  Rock on Wilson Sisters.

Nicole Scherzinger Did Not Deserve To Win Dancing With The Stars - This Show Is a Sham!!!

I am shocked and appalled. From the beginning of the show I have been extremely upset that Nicole Scherzinger was even allowed to compete. Dancing With The Stars is supposed to be an amateur dancing competition for TV personalities that are not trained dancers to come out and learn something new and in the process make a pretty entertaining show. This was the first season I actually decided to watch and I am extremely disappointed. Nicole Scherzinger is a dancer! She dances for a living… no matter that it’s  a different style of dance. Once you are a dancer, it’s in your blood, it’s in your body, you have an ear for musicality, the right posture and you know how to move your body. From the beginning Nicole has said that her dance experience will not help her in this competition – BULLSHIT!!!

I was really rooting for Erin Andrews and Maks, she was fantastic. Here is a woman who is not a professional dancer but she has managed to learn, surprise and give above and beyond to this competition – and she gets third place? Ok so Evan may have musicality and great lines from skating but dancing is a little different, still he had an advantage over people like Buzz Aldrin and Shannon Doherty. I would have been ok with him winning, as long as it wasn’t Nicole. I used to be such a fan of The Pussycat Dolls and Nicole Scherzinger managed to even ruin that for me.

Dancing With Th Stars is FAKE! It’s fixed and it’s a sham of a competition. Might as well just change the name from Dancing With The Stars to Dancing With The Stars That Can Already Dance. We already have So You Think You Can Dance, we don’t need you. Please go off the air now. Thanks. I’m sorry but I’m just very upset about this.

Top Video Monday - Dolly Parton / 9 To 5

9 to 5 was written and performed by country singer Dolly Parton, for the 1980 comedy Nine to Five, starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Parton, in her film debut. The film’s title song gave Parton four Grammy Award nominations and an Academy Award nomination, winning her the awards for “Best Country Vocal Performance, Female” and “Best Country Song”. The song was also released as a single in November 1980 and by 1981 reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Country Chart as well as two Canadian charts.

The catchy song became something of an anthem for office workers around the U.S. that were very happy their feelings were finally put into public words. The song and film actually owe their titles to an organization founded in 1973 with the aim of bringing better treatment for women in the workplace. The video itself is a collection of Dolly Parton scenes from the movie, as well as her singing in the background. I have actually never seen the movie but it looks pretty funny from the clips.  Enjoy.

Top Video Monday - Blondie / Call Me

Call Me is a song released in 1980 by the American new wave band Blondie. To break it down, a European disco producer named Giorgio Moroder first asked Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac to help compose and perform a song (that didn’t exist at the time) for his soundtrack, Nicks declined because she recently signed a contract with Modern Records, which prevented her from working with Moroder.

Moroder’s second choice was Debbie Harry and Blondie. Moroder presented Harry with a rough instrumental track called “Man Machine” and Harry was asked to write in her own lyrics and melody, which surprisingly took only a few hours. The completed song was then recorded by the band, with Moroder producing. Twenty-five years after its original release, “Call Me” was ranked at #283 on the list of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Top Video Monday - Heart / Alone

Wow they really don’t make them like they used to anymore do they. Alone was originally composed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and was given to Heart who released the single in 1987 as part of their ninth studio album Bad Animals. Heart made it a hit song to be remembered for decades to come. Even though the vocals for the song were sung by Heart’s lead singer Ann Wilson, Tom Kelly, one of the original composers of the song, sung high harmony parts on the record.

Alone became Heart’s biggest hit and made onto the Australian, Norwegian, Swiss and UK singles charts as well as on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at #1. Celine Dion recorded her own version of the song as part of her 2007 album Taking Chances and had it produced by Ben Moody, an ex-member of the American Rock band Evanescence.

Ellen DeGeneres And Madonna Are Related!

madonna-and-ellen-degeneresWell it looks like I was about a day early on things you didn’t know about Ellen DeGeneres. According to E!, genealogy researchers at Ancestry.com discovered that the queen of Pop and the American Idol judge are in fact related. Ellen and Madonna are 11th cousins and they share a common 10th great-grandfather, Frenchman Martin Aucoin.

So lets check out the similarities – Madonna and Ellen were both born in 1958, they are both blond with blue eyes, both entertainers, both like to dance and according to whosdatedwho.com, Madonna once had a three year “encounter” with Sandra Bernhard who is a comedian just like Ellen. Madonna also supposedly dated supermodel Naomi Campbell. I found the missing link people :-) . And finally, Madonna definitely looks like someone Ellen DeGeneres would date (If she wasn’t married to gorgeous Porsche De Rossi of course).

Ancestry.com also revealed Harry Potter star Emma Watson ‘s connection to a woman accused of witchcraft, just like Sarah Jessica Parker shown on Lisa Kudrow’s new genealogy show, Who Do You Think You Are?. Looks like I wasn’t the only one who was inspired.

Celebrity Lookalikes: America Ferrera and Jordin Sparks

Jordin_Sparks_America_FerreraIt has always been pretty amazing to me how two people that were born years apart, in different parts of the globe to different nationalities, can look so much alike.

This time I would like to point out two young ladies from different areas of the entertainment business. America Ferrera is an actress, while Jordin Sparks is a singer. I know they look like identical twins, or at least sisters, but they are actually very different. America is five years older than Jordin but Jordin is much much taller (Pretty much taller than most women actually).

America is known for playing an ugly chick who works at a fashion magazine and Jordin is known for calling 95% of the female population sluts. I know what you’re thinking… “Oh know she didn’t”… That’s right, oh yes she did. During the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, Jordin responded to Russell Brand’s jokes about the Jonas brothers wearing purity rings, by saying the following: “I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut”. Nice going Jordin Sparks, you’re a virgin and an idiot.
