When you think Italian fine dining, do you think of the Olive Garden? Well the obvious answer is no, of course not but for me and the misses we decided to take the plunge and visit the Olive Garden together for the first time. Our restaurant of choice this time around resides at NE 181 st. and Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami FL.
We arrived around 7 pm on a Saturday evening and the place was pretty packed, as we expected. We grabbed one of those black square things and waited around about 15 minutes before being seated at a booth, as we requested. Our waiter’s name was Daniel and as I remember it, he came over and offered us drinks immediately. Good Start.
As is tradition now when Mrs. Smith and I visit a chain restaurant, I ordered the sampler appetizer of fried calamari, chicken fingers and beef toasted ravioli. As an entree, I decided on the mixed grill (one chicken skewer and one beef skewer with grilled vegetables) and Mrs. Smith picked the Seafood Portofino, which was made up of mussels, shrimp and other seafood I can’t remember at the moment, on a bed of pasta with a cream sauce. While we waited, we were treated to unlimited salad and bread-sticks. FINALLY after 25 years of non-stop commercials, I was able to see what the fuss was all about. Salad great / bread-sticks not so much for me because I’m not a fan of garlic. Mrs. Smith liked ‘em, so I guess they were good.
While we were waiting for our food to arrive, we noticed just how many elderly people there were at Olive Garden this time of night. To our left was a very German couple and everywhere else we looked, there seemed to be senior citizens between the ages of 65 and 95. The poor bastard we had serve us also had some very demanding customers to take care of and I felt nothing but pity for him. I heard conversations about everything from WWII to if the television “program” called “Letterman” was on Saturday’s. Serious life changing stuff.
Appetizers arrived and the chicken and calamari was great. Unfortunately, I found the fried beef ravioli to be all bread and no meat so we plowed through the first two and reluctantly finished up the rest of our ravioli. Shortly after finishing our appetizers, our food arrived and the portion size was very nice. My skewers looked quite tasty and Mrs. Smith also found her dish appealing. Digging in, I found my medium-rare beef and vegetables to be absolutely fantastic. The chicken was somewhat dry, so I tried to eat that right away before it turned into a rock (which it did anyway). Mrs. Smith took care of all her seafood and left just a little pasta on her plate and I can’t remember exactly what we talked about but we chatted away for about an hour.
Around 9pm, we asked for our check and with tax and tip, our bill came to a flat $55. That’s somewhat expensive for a chain restaurant but I consider the Olive Garden on the Outback Steakhouse level. Just a notch above the rest. Overall, our experience was fantastic, the service was fantastic and our food was very good. We’ll definitely be planning a second and third visit to the Olive Garden soon. I certainly wouldn’t consider the Olive Garden Fine Italian Dining, but I would consider it Quality Italian Dining.
You might not know it because of all the sports and movie pieces I write here but I’m a very avid music aficionado. Not having a voice of my own has not stopped me from screaming out my favorite songs when I hear them and truth be told, it takes one hell of a song these days to blow my skirt up.
Something about music today just isn’t the same as the songs I’ve come to know and love from the 60′s 70′s and 80′s. Sure most of the R&B and Rap songs that come out today make for great club and dance music but I value a good set of lyrics and a solid vocal performance more than a couple of rhymes and a good beat. It’s for this reason that I felt compelled to remind or introduce you to the greatest songwriter and singer I have ever and will ever have the pleasure of listening to: Ann and Nancy Wilson.
Heart was a rock band formed back in the 60′s and was eventually headed by two young and upcoming sisters in the 70′s named Ann and Nancy Wilson. Ann Wilson was lead vocalist and Nancy Wilson was secondary vocalist and they each shared a variety of instruments, most notably the guitar work of Nancy. Throughout the 70′s and 80′s, Heart was pegged as one of the best rock groups around and even today, they’re releasing a new album entitled Red Velvet Car, with 14 new songs. It’s rare to see a band stick together as much as Heart has over the last 30 years but boy am I glad they did.
When I hear good music for the first time, I immediately ask Mrs. Smith who has sung this song (She’s more up-to-date on these sort of things) and then I go straight for the computer to research the song. I’ll play it over and over and over again, picking apart every word to see if it’s truly a great piece of work or just something that sounds pretty cool because of a nifty DJ. After listening to a lot of the songs Heart has put out over the last 30 years, I’m confident in saying that there is no greater set of pipes than the ones Ann Wilson has been using.
That woman … wow can she belt out a note. I work from home every-day and find myself listening to at least a few Heart songs over and over again simply because of the marvel known as Ann Wilson. You can take all of the Beyonce’s, Katy Perry’s, Pinks, Fergie’s, Carrie Underwood’s you want and absolutely none of them will compare with what Ann Wilson can do. To be fair all of the aforementioned are excellent performers and have great great talent but it’s just not the same. Many would dare to compare Ann Wilson to Madonna and Lady Gaga but that’s not appropriate. Madonna and Lady Gaga have great voices and their performances are like nothing we’ve ever seen before but if you take away their acts, they don’t hold a candle to Ann’s voice.
Watching old Heart videos, you’re usually use to seeing Nancy Wilson with the striking blond hair, jamming out on a guitar while Ann Wilson has the microphone a full foot away from her mouth for fear of blowing it up with her powerful voice. Music videos like Magic Man, Barracuda and my absolute favorite, Alone, have reminded me about a generation that brought the absolute best out of the music industry. I fear that a talent like these two will never surface again because of what the music industry has become. More about the looks and the act, rather than the voice in my opinion. I mean … have you actually heard Ke$ha sing? It’s like watching Alicia Sylverstone’s role in “Clueless” put to music. No thank-you.
So to anyone out there that thinks the music of today is where it’s at, I challenge you to pick up a Heart CD or simply visit You Tube and check out Ann and Nancy Wilson. Make sure you filter through to the “Alone” music video, past or present and then come back here and thank me for introducing you to real rock music. Rock on Wilson Sisters.
The Mrs and I don’t eat out often, probably because we are diligently saving money for our future. Eventually, we would like to move from Miami into a colder climate and make a sizable down payment on our first house. When we are able to splurge, we usually visit a globally recognized chain restaurant, like you’ve seen in our previous Applebee’s, Chili’s and TGI Friday’s reviews. In keeping with the trend, we decided to go to our local Denny’s restaurant, located on Biscayne and 36th ave, about 2 miles north of downtown Miami.
We arrived around 7:00 pm ET and noticed right away that there was only one other family eating at that time. The location I mentioned above is extremely busy at almost every hour of a 24-hour day and I would have thought that this Denny’s would be buzzing on a Friday night, but the place was super dead. We were seated in one of the 1,000 open booths and checked out Denny’s new value menu that had a lot of choices at $2, $4, $6 and $8. The wife and I agreed on getting the sampler for an appetizer then I ordered the cowboy steak with cheddar mashed potatoes and hash-browns and she also ordered the cowboy steak (but with no onions) with sides of coleslaw and ranchero mashed potatoes. I would guess the orders were placed around 7:15 pm ET.
Well, 7:30 pm rolls around and our waiter was no where to be seen. We were getting worried because there is literally 3 other customers in the restaurant who arrived around 10 minutes after us and it’s at this time Mrs. Smith starts getting antsy. Another five minutes passes and she goes from antsy to angry. Five minutes after that, we are served the WRONG entrees. Not even the wrong appetizer mind you … the wrong entrees. So the three people sitting next to us received their meals first and right after that, we were given our meals. It would appear that the appetizer was forgotten about completely and with zero appetizer orders outside of ours, it was extremely disappointing.
So here we have our dinners but there’s another problem. Mrs. Smith no-onion steak was loaded with onions. To prevent her from throwing them around the room, I grabbed her plate and gave it back to the waiter. He said he put the order in with no onions and even tried to show me on the monitor where orders are taken but I didn’t care, I just wanted a steak with no onions. One minute later, the steak returned, obviously scraped free of visible onions. Problem #2 … there were still plenty of onions in the cheese and on the steak. The Medusa-like stare that I received from Mrs. Smith for the next 10 minutes would have turned any other man into stone I assure you.
The next twenty or so minutes were spent trying to calm her down from a rampage in Denny’s that would have killed only me, because I was the only one there. To be fair, the hamburger steaks were actually pretty good, as were the sides. The waiter, admitting defeat, gave us our check without even offering dessert and even though the meal was like Chinese water torture, I ordered the $2 pancake puff dessert. By far, the best part of the evening as it’s well proportioned and quite tasty. $19 and change bill because there was no appetizer and I strangely left a very high tip to round the total to $21.00. (10% was not deserved but at Denny’s you pay at the cashier and I was compelled to leave a dollar more than I should have)
The empty restaurant on what should be a busy Friday night should have told us to keep on walking but we didn’t listen. Mrs. Smith undoubtedly had a worse go of it than I did but her anger quickly turned into my anger and rightfully so. We only received half of our order … and even that was wrong! Sadly, I was a big fan of Denny’s before this incident and while we might still go to Denny’s in the future, one thing is for sure, the Denny’s on 36th and Biscayne in Miami should be avoided at all costs. Sometimes good food is worth the trouble but this isn’t even close.
The first official game of the 2010 NCAA Men’s College Basketball tournament pits the fifth seeded BYU Cougars against the 10th seeded Florida Gators. Some of you might be wondering how a team like BYU was ranked seventh and even more mind-boggling is that Florida, a team that had no business making the tournament, received a 10 seed. Is this game as close as the seeds would lead you to believe?
(7) BYU Cougars (29-5) vs. (10) Florida Gators (21-12)
Game Time 12:20 ET Thursday, March 18th 2010
In this bloggers opinion, Brigham Young has had the most underrated team in college basketball for as long as I can remember. In what was expected to be somewhat of a down year for the Cougars due to the loss of Lee Cummard, BYU came out of the gates blazing. It took 22 games for the Cougars to lose their 2nd game of the season and the good fortune can be attributed to the MVP play of guard Jimmer Fredette. Averaging 21.7 points per game, Fredette is the floor general for BYU and when you have a supporting cast that includes Tyler Haws and Jonathan Tavernari, BYU should have done much better than a seven seed. The pace is extremely fast for these guys and when their hitting their treys, they are as close to invincible as any other team in this tournament. BYU tanked in last years tournament with an opening round loss to Texas A&M but I expect better things from them this year.
Thanks to an extremely favorable NCAA committee, the Florida Gators were blessed with a tournament birth. representing the SEC, Florida was impressive at times but overall the team showed an inconsistency common with youth. Every starter averages double figures, so the one thing Florida has going for itself is unpredictability. At any given time, a different Gator can catch fire and carry the team. The offense usually revolved around the post play of big man Vernon Macklin, and Florida can also play a fast paced style. After winning back to back NCAA championships, Florida had missed the NCAA tournament in 2008 and 2009 and without a senior on the starting squad, the team lacks big game experience because of it.
Previous NCAA tournaments have shown that teams undeserving of an NCAA bid usually prove why they received one, but any sane minded soul should see how much better the BYU Cougars are from the counterpart. Florida may be a team to reckon with next year, as everyone is returning, but expect BYU to start the game off with some hot shooting, never allowing Florida a chance to breath.
Final Score Prediction: BYU Cougars 84 – Florida Gators 66
Who’s excited for the 2010 NCAA tournament? If you’re hand isn’t raised high in the air right now, you are no friend of mine. Over the next few weeks we will cover every single game that this tournament has to offer. That means sixty four previews, most of which will come in the first four days of the tournament. I can feel the carpel tunnel coming!
We start with the Tuesday night play in game between the 16th seeded Winthrop Eagles and the 16th seeded Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions.
(16) Winthrop Eagles (19-13) vs. (16) Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions (17-15)
Game Time 7:30 ET Tuesday, March 16th 2010
A few years ago, the tournament had a brainiac idea to expand the field from 64 teams to 65, allowing for one more “bubble” team to make the cut. This meant that the two least qualified automatic bids would have to play each other for the right to get crushed in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This year, those teams are Winthrop and Arkansas Pine-Bluff.
Winthrop comes in out of the Big South Conference, where year in and year out, they seem to get the job done. For the past few years, they have entered the conference tournament without the number one seed, but it seems seeding doesn’t matter in the Big South, just count Winthrop in. The team isn’t as talented as years past and in order to win, Winthrop has had to develop a defensive minded game-plan. With only one double digit scorer on the squad (Reggie Middleton), you won’t find any explosive outbursts from the Eagles, but rather a slow and methodical pace. Limit the possessions, limit the gap in athleticism.
On the other side of the coin, the Golden Lions of Arkansas Pine Bluff were granted access to the 2010 NCAA tournament with a SWAC conference championship win over Texas Southern. In what could only be described as a “brutal” game, Pine-Bluff won the SWAC with a 50-38 score on Saturday night, giving them their first ever NCAA tournament appearance. Early in the season, Arkansas Pine-Bluff traveled everywhere and appropriately lost everywhere. The team has two scorers in double digits (Terrance Calvin (10.4ppg) and Savalance Townsend (10.2 ppg)) who play at the same methodical pace Winthrop does.
The winner of this content gets to square off against the Duke Blue Devils on Friday and while both teams will be thrilled to play in this game, it would be a big disappointment not to make it to the official first round. With zero out of conference wins, the Golden Lions of Arkansas Pine-Bluff will be out-played, out-coached and totally out-manned for the majority of this game. The game will be extremely slow, which will keep APB in it, but look for Winthrop to be obliterated by Duke on Friday.
Final Score Prediction: Winthrop Eagles 61 – Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Eagles 49
A perennial powerhouse from the Big East meets an unknown star from the Northeast conference when the Villanova Wildcats take on the Robert Morris Colonials. Villanova faltered toward the end of the season, losing five of their last seven games while Robert Morris won five of their last seven, including the NEC conference tournament. With the game being played in Providence, Rhode Island, Villanova should have a high number of fans in attendance and that’s just another reason why Robert Morris will stand little chance in this matchup.
(2) Villanova Wildcats (24-7) vs. (15) Robert Morris Colonials (23-11)
Game Time 12:30 ET Thursday, March 18th 2010
The Villanova Wildcats finished the season in a tie for second place in the Big East conference and considering they were once 20-1 on the season, the end result can only be looked at as a disappointment. Grabbing a two seed in the tournament was a bit of a blessing as many (including myself) didn’t think the kids from Philly deserved such a high seed. The Wildcats play a sloppy fast paced game that is usually filled with a lot of turnovers, fouls and free-throws and if you blink at the wrong moment, they can put 10 points up on you just like that. Experience in the back-court and inexperience in the front court is the story of Villanova with senior guard Scottie Reynolds leading the way. Reynolds is having his best year ever as a Wildcat, averaging 18+ points per game on a very impressive 48% field goal average. The rest of the squad is made up of underclassmen, and unlike Syracuse, Villanova is not shy about playing everyone. You’ll find 10+ in every Villanova box-score and Jay Wright is hoping that giving the freshman a lot of playing time during the season, keeps the team fresh for a long tournament run.
On the other side of the coin stands the Robert Morris Colonials who edged Qunnipiac in the NEC championship 52-50. The Colonials have played two Big East teams this season, both on the road, and the end result were two losses by a combined 64 points. Ouch. Karon Abraham is the teams leading scorer at just under 14 points per game and while Villanova will be looking to run the tempo, you can bet Robert Morris will try their best to slow the game down to half-court. The NEC has never produced a victory in the NCAA tournament since expanding to 64 teams and Robert Morris hopes to make an 0-25 record or at least a 1-25 record.
Two seeds rarely lose opening round games and considering that the NEC has never won a tournament game, only a fool would bet against the Wildcats. I do expect Robert Morris to keep this game relatively close from start to finish but Villanova should not be sweating this first round match-up like they have in years past.
Final Score Prediction: Villanova Wildcats 74 – Robert Morris Colonials 64
Just a few weeks ago, Notre Dame had little to no chance in making the final 65. With the loss of their big man, Luke Harangody, the Irish were coming off of a three game losing streak and it appeared that streak would continue to grow. Somehow, someway, Notre Dame finished the regular season on a four game winning streak and made a deep run in the Big East tournament. Rewarded with a six seed, the Fighting Irish will square off against the Monarchs of Old Dominion in the first round.
(6) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (23-11) vs. (11) Old Dominion Monarchs (26-8)
Game Time 12:25 ET Thursday, March 18th 2010
When you think Notre Dame, the first sport that comes to mind is usually football but for the past few years, it’s been the basketball team making headlines for good play. Earlier this year, ND was known for their high flying offense, never taking more than 10 seconds on an offensive possession but poor performances have led Mike Brey to slow the game down to the point where reaching 60 is nearly impossible. Only going seven deep, the Fighting Irish still count on Harangody’s inside presence as well as the outside sharpshooting of Ben Hansbrough and Tim Abromatis. Unfortunately, if there was one eleven seed the Irish did not match-up well against, it was the Old Dominion Monarchs.
Old Dominion comes out of the Colonial Athletic Association and are winners of both the CAA regular season and conference tournament titles. The Monarchs are no strangers to March Madness, having appeared nine times prior to this year and with two prior NCAA tournament wins, ODU looks primed to surprise the non-believers. Old Dominion’s winning ways can be attributed to their play on the defensive end, holding opponents to 57 points per game and on the offensive end, Gerald Lee runs the show. Averaging 14.6 points per game, Lee touches the ball on every possession and ODU finds a way to generate high quality shots each and every time. Put on the map with a road win at Georgetown, the Monarchs were consistent all season and were invincible on their home floor.
Notre Dame holds the advantage on talent but that’s about it in this match-up. They exhausted a lot of energy just making sure they had a place in this tournament and I expect an experienced Old Dominion squad to squeak through. Mark this on your bracket as the first upset of the tournament.
Final Score Prediction:Notre Dame Fighting Irish 57 – Old Dominion Monarchs 59
If you’re just tuning in, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are lobbying Congress to change the value of a minute to 59.9 seconds instead of 60. If it goes anything like the SEC championship game earlier today, MS State will once again, come up empty.
The poor Bulldogs were literally one-tenth of a second away from securing their second consecutive SEC tournament championship, when DeMarcus Cousins put back a John Wall miss that tied the game as time expired. You could tell that after that shot, Mississippi State had less than a 0% chance of pulling the game out in OT as every player was emotionally and physically exhausted. Without debating the logistics of the game, (Mississippi State should not have fouled in the end) I ask you, is one-tenth of a second enough reason to keep a team from the 2010 NCAA tournament?
To be fair … it’s a pretty loaded question. Should Mississippi State have won that game, they would have made the NCAA tournament as a 9 or 10 seed but the NCAA committee decided that one-tenth of a second was enough to keep them out of the tournament completely. In addition to the Bulldogs, Illinois and Virginia Tech probably feel a bit snubbed too, but I think their cases are slightly different. Let’s dive right into why I feel Mississippi State deserved in.
First, in order to put Mississippi State into the field, one team has to come out. Do me a favor and make a chomping motion with your hands … FLORIDA had no business of making the NCAA tournament, let alone getting in as a 10 seed. Baffles my mind that Florida could get such a high seed, meaning the committee respected the SEC but the team that beat Florida two days ago on a neutral court, THEN beat Vanderbilt the day after that gets left out. It’s not like this team was bad to begin with, they had the same conference record, better overall record and better SEC tournament seeding than Florida too.
Second, Mississippi State had a stronger non-conference schedule. (143rd vs. 184th) It’s not the greatest in the world but its one of the factors that the committee looks into and it favors the bulldogs (Of course I’m going to pick things that favor my argument!).
Third, Mississippi State finished the season with 6 wins in 10 games. Two of those games were OT losses to Kentucky, so again, while it’s not super impressive, it’s better than Florida. The Gators finished with 4 wins in 10 games, two of which were wins against Auburn. What else do you want?
In fairness to Florida, their argument would be that they won the high profile games, early in the season against Florida State and Michigan State but other than that, I truly do not understand the decision. Mississippi State came into the season as a ranked team and it appears that an opening game loss to Rider actually cost them a tournament birth. They always say you can’t lose your season in the first game but Mississippi State knows better. If sports teaches us anything, it’s that the better team doesn’t always win … and Mississippi State was clearly the better team.
So somehow, someway, Mrs. Smith was able to grapple her hooks into me and make me watch the last five or six episodes of this season of The Bachelor. Honestly speaking, I’ve always thought of the idea to be extremely stupid. Forcing love on one person by choosing 25 strangers they’ve never met and allowing them to spend a few hours a day with them for a few months is a great way to staff divorce lawyers in my opinion. Be that as it may, I recognize the flash and dash and why the show continues to be successful, Because watching beautiful people live the beautiful life and find true love is what each and every American dreams of. But after watching last night’s finale, I found myself turning away from the television in disgust. Enough is enough.
If you’re a frequent reader of our blog, then you know I have a sweet tooth for the horror movie genre. Not so much for the blood and guts aspect of the crap a lot of directors are putting out today but more for the original ideas and psychological aspect. I can withstand anything a movie throws at me because I know, no matter what, it’s for show. The gore, the body parts, ehh, been there done that. The Bachelor on the other hand is real life for some. You follow the characters, you learn their stories and then you pick someone who you want to “win”.
In last nights finale, there were two women left vying for Jake’s proposal and an unarguable fact was that Tenley is the sweeter of the two. Sadly, you also know that she was married once and had a douche of a husband, so if she’s not selected by Jake, the train most certainly will come off of the tracks. Anyone following The Bachelor, probably knew that Vienna was the choice before it happened and the episode clearly showed that Jake was undoubtedly going that way, but when it came time to get down on one knee, I have to admit, I actually was pulling for Tenley.
Then it happened. All of the reasons I never wanted to watch this inane show in the first place we’re broadcast across the country when Jake delivered the crushing blow to the one woman out of 25 that simply could not take it. What made it worse, was the chatter from Tenley walking up to the podium, knowing that she was the one Jake was going to pick. The horror! I found myself not even being able to watch as a woman who had her heart broken once, simply had it ripped out of her chest this time around. The tears that ran down her face almost brought me, a manly man, to tears. Just awful.
Now I’m not as naive as you may think. I know that by going on a show like this, you leave the possibility open that you fall in love and don’t make it all the way to top dog. I have to imagine, that Tenley’s family begged her not to go on this show because of this very reason. With that said, no one deserves this. Certainly not a girl as nice as Tenley. THEN, if that wasn’t enough, she got to relive the moment over and over again during the recap after-show.
Will Jake and Vienna’s love last? Long shot. Would Jake and Tenley’s love had lasted? Even longer shot. But that’s not the point. The Bachelor is a show with no chance of a happy ending and a 100% chance of a lot of broken hearts. Sure it makes for excellent television but I’ll take the happy endings every day of the week and twice on Sundays. No more Bachelor for me!
The orange, white and blue of the Netherlands may be fielding their strongest team to date for the 2010 World Cup and if the qualification stage was any indication, Holland should breeze through the group stage. Paired with Denmark, Japan and Cameroon, the Dutch are favored to win the group and my personal dark-horse to advance to the semifinals of the competition.
Previous World Cup’s have not been very kind to the Netherlands and the tradition of world-class football is not nearly what it is for some of the other high-profile teams competing. Much to my surprise (I’m only 25), Holland made back-to-back World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978 but lost them both. Since then, the team has done poorly, missing qualification for the World Cup three times.
If there’s one clear advantage that the Netherlands has coming into the 2010 World Cup and it’s the experience all of their players will have on the pitch. Every projected starter has at least 25 team caps except one and even the primary subs are no stranger to stiff competition. Familiar names like Klaas Jan-Huntelaar and Ryan Babel will anchor the late game substitutions and while you won’t see the familiar face of Edwin van der Saar in goal, Maarten Stekelenburg is no slouch.
Since 1978, Holland has not looked outside of their own country for a football coach and in 2008, after a disappointing exit in extra time of 2008 Euro, the Dutch have turned to untested Bert van Marwijk to lead. Because he’s early in his coaching career, Marwijk is known more for being the father in-law of forward Mark van Bommel than for anything he’s done in his new leadership role. 4th place here he comes!
